Alpine touring (also known as AT, ski mountaineering / “skimo,” and randonee / “rando”) is a fun and challenging form of skiing that involves skiing both up the hill and back down. For the ascent, an athlete uses climbing skins on the bottom of his or her skis for traction while climbing the hill with a motion that’s something in between hiking and classic-style nordic skiiing. To descend, climbing skins are removed, boot heels are secured to skis via the bindings, and the athlete skis down in a manner similar to traditional downhill skiing. An athlete will often complete multiple laps up and down during the course of a training session or race.
Alpine touring requires specialized equipment. Start with AT skis, which vary significantly in size, weight, material and cost depending on the intended purpose such as racing, backcountry, or resort skiing. AT-specific bindings allow the toe of the boot to remain attached to the ski while climbing and descending and the heel to clip in only for descending. Boots are highly specialized to fit such bindings; they are lighter and more flexible than downhill boots but more supportive than nordic boots. Climbing skins are sticky on the side that touches the skis, and the other side uses short synthetic or natural hairs to gain traction on the snow. They must be compatible with the skis you are using. Poles and winter clothing (you’ll be warm and working hard going up and cold going down) are required, as are caloric fuel and hydration for longer sessions. Sunglasses or goggles and a helmet are necessary. Consult a reputable shop or experts in your area to make sure you are purchasing gear suitable to your needs.
To learn alpine touring, consider starting online with some videos showing climbing form and the transitions between climbing and descending. It’s important to understand the basics of transitions so the climbing skins are stored properly and the skis don’t go shooting down the hill. Begin by practicing transitions with boots, bindings, skis, and climbing skins in your house or garage to familiarize yourself with the moving parts. After checking with policies at ski resorts and/or backcountry areas, start training in controlled conditions, always away from downhill traffic and slopes that could slide. If you are in the backcountry, be sure to acquire avalanche safety knowledge and carry an avalanche beacon, a shovel, and a probe. Tour with a partner or a group to increase fun and safety, particularly in the backcountry.
In addition to being a lot of fun, alpine touring provides excellent cardiovascular and strength training; it’s used widely by elite ultra runners and cyclists in the off-season.
The Ultra Mindset:
An Endurance Champion’s 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life
Travis Macy summited glacial peaks in the French Alps, rapelled into cavernous limestone caves in China, and ran through parched deserts in Utah. Most famously, he won the Leadman, a high-altitude combination trail running marathon, 50-mile mountain biking race, 100-mile mountain biking race, 10K run, and 100-mile trail run. Macy accomplished it without exceptional strength, speed, flexibility, high tech performance labs, or performance-enhancing drugs. His secret? A precise and particular outlook he calls the “Ultra Mindset,” principles for daily life which are neither mysterious nor the sole province of ascetics or elite athletes: embrace fear, rewrite stories we tell ourselves, and master the art of seeking help, among others. By applying the Ultra Mindset principles to other areas of life, anyone can find success that otherwise would have been impossible.
