These last few miles felt like the last days of school. Soon I would no longer wake up in the woods, nor breath New England air and many of my friends had already summited and returned home. *Click ‘SHOW MORE’ below for more notes about this video…
70 miles to go… I had planned to go to White House Landing and buy a little food, and even walked a mile off-trail to a wooden boat dock where I found a southbound hiker waiting patiently.
He had already used the powerful air-horn an hour ago, to summon a motor boat from the other side of the lake, to ferry hikers to the hostel. The sign was adamant to only blow the horn once and the hostel owner is notorious for being moody. I didn’t see him coming anytime soon and with miles already wasted, I cut my losses and turned around, missing a fun video opportunity, and with my food bag nearly empty.
(0:03) 60 miles to go… Cooper Brook Falls lean-to was built at beauty spot with an amazing view of the water.
(0:38) 56 miles to go… Jo Mary Road was busy with huge 18 wheelers barreling through the otherwise peaceful wilderness.
The cold temps and the fever pitch the hike had taken on, were burning calories fast. I hung out, hoping to see Texas Pete. His Mom still suffered effects from Lyme disease, and had left the trail again. They had a food bucket drop here and said he would not be able to carry it all.
No Pete, but I was quite proud to Yogi a section hiker of a teeny-tiny honey bear!
(0:40) This is thru hiker ‘Zero’, we both started our hikes in Georgia, but had only met recently.
(0:59) A bridge in the 100 Mile Wilderness!
(1:02) I even tried to yogi this squirrel out of his pinecone, but he was wise to hiker mind tricks! Very impressive how fast he dismantled it of tasty morsels.
(1:14) Jo Mary Lake was absolutely beautiful and the trees had started to change to pastel yellows, oranges, and reds. Only 2 nights left and I had developed a blister that felt like there was a rubber band around my toes. My back was hurting too and I was popping Vitamin I, even taking them first thing in the mornings, as preventive maintenance.
(1:52) 48 miles to go… Potaywadjo lean-to. It was getting late and several hikers were camping out. This trail dog was friendly and did not try to eat me.
I made camp, a few miles to the North, almost directly on the trail, next to a river. I went to sleep thinking about all the cool people I had met on this journey, some of who had to leave the trail for various reasons, and would not feel this anticipation of completing this goal, long in the making.
(1:59) These aluminum steps were an unusual site anywhere on the trail, but especially here in the ‘wilderness’.
(2:01) Texas Pete! He gifted me some rice sides, granola bars, and oatmeal, but left most of his extra food at the road. Doh! He was looking boney and dangerously thin, but he was a hiking machine!
We both planned to summit the next day, otherwise we would have to wait around because of rains forecasted over the next few days.
We talked briefly and using the buddy system for support and to push each other, then RAN half the day. Our pace was WIDE OPEN and very exciting and I was grinning the whole time, jumping over logs, rocks, and roots!
We startled a moose and heard it running through the woods. Another time, as we were running full tilt, a step drop off appeared right in front of us! We both had no choice but to jump it, but landed safely, 5 feet below.
(2:04) We were on a mission, but took time to savor moments like this, taking our break here with Katahdin shrouded in clouds, in front of us.
(2:10) 30 miles to go… Rainbow Stream lean-to had a cool totem pole outside. I needed a break and told Pete to keep going. I never saw him again.
(2:21) 21 miles to go… Rainbow ledges. The view actually took my breath away! I imagine there may have been thru-hikers on top, celebrating at that very moment.
My fingers were freezing and all tingly. Not sure if it was the cold, or gripping my trekking poles too tight, or if I was having a heart attack. The uncomfortable sensation went away after taking a break.
I continued to run, and had already traveled 20 miles by 4 o’clock! With another 6 to my goal of Abol bridge ,where I could get some FOOD! All I had left was a single pack of oatmeal, but had to get there before they closed at 8.
I almost gave up, but made it to the road with 15 minutes to spare.
(4:37) “Oh shit!” I noticed Mount Katahdin towering over the dark landscape and it stopped me in my tracks. It was so close!
(4:48) Abol Bridge Store where I bought $7 worth of junk food: Pop Tarts, Ramen, Pretzels, Snickers, and oatmeal. (http://abolcampground.com).
I was exhausted after hiking 28 miles, my record for the whole trip! Stealth camping is prohibited within Baxter State Park and I could not afford to pay for the campground, so I crawled back into the woods near the road.
It was my last night sleeping on the Appalachian Trail…
