This video shows highlights from a 4 day / 3 night backpacking trip in the Great Smoky Mountains during October 2016.
Day 1: Starting at Smokemont Campground, 2198 ft, (parked at the Bradley Fork Trailhead) and hiking to Newton Bald backcountry campsite #52, 5154 ft. Getting sidetracked by the Tow String horse trail made this ~7 mile day. Normally it is 5.2 miles from Smokemont to Newton Bald.
Day 2: Hiking Thomas Divide, Kanati Fork, Kephart Prong, and Dry Sluice Gap trails to backcountry campsite #49, Cabin Flats, at 3060 ft. Approximately a 14 mile day.
Day 3: Hiked Dry Sluice, Hughes Ridge, Chasteen Creek trails to campsite #48, Upper Chasteen, at 3320 ft. Around 9 miles this day.
Day 4: Hiked Chasteen Creek to Bradley Fork trails back to Smokemont campground. This was a short ~5 mile day.
The temperatures were slightly above average for October, but cooled considerably after it rained the third night. Conditions were dry, but water was available at all three of the campsites as well as when we passed Kephart shelter. A week after we finished the trip, campfires were banned at backcountry campsites because of the dry conditions.
Taking the loop in the direction we did made Newton Bald and Kephart Prong the two significant climbs.
