This is a video about the Juneau Ice Caves, we hiked there. Bill Berry did cold Yoga there.
We did this hike while sailing on a cruise ship, we rented a car. You will park in the parking lot of the West Glacier Trail (there are porta-potties here). From there you will head out on the trail. You will hike for about a mile on relatively flat ground with little elevation change. You are hiking along the Mendenhall River. Then you will start to climb, the hike is beautiful and includes some stone steps, and you are in a forest here. The forest turns into a rock and lateral meringue hike that is very loose, similar to shale. I recommend hiking poles but you don’t need them. It’s a 7-mile round trip hike that I would consider intermediate, or moderate. There are a few boulders and one roped section, but they are relatively easy, mainly because there’s a rope to climb. Here’s the part you need to pay attention to. As you get closer to the glacier you need to decide if you are going to stay on the dirt (lateral meringue) or hike on the glacier. My advice is to stay on the dirt because the edges of glacier can be quite unstable, it may look thick but there’s no way to tell if it will support your weight, water commonly cuts away at the edges of the glacier.
Is it safe? First you should understand why it exists. Most glaciers move constantly, because of this they are very unstable. This ice cave exists because a large rock outcropping blocks the glaciers flow from moving this section. So it is very stable compared to the rest of the glacier, does that make is safe? Only an experienced guide can tell you that. And even then there is risk, a risk you accept. In other words I disavow all risk associated with you trying any of this. But here’s the reality, you could break your ankle in the parking lot. A bear that’s riding on a moose could eat you. My point is, life is not safe and this is an awesome adventure. It’s an adventure that will be gone in a couple seasons because the glacier is melting and receding, I don’t care what side of the debate of global warming you are on. This glacier is receding every year and these caves will be gone.
A river has cut through them and they are amazing. There are many areas in the cave where no water drips on you. But entering the cave and going through the end where there’s a large hole from above you will get wet.
