Last month, my dad and I took a crevasse rescue course with a local guide service. We decided to take a trip up the relatively tame Inter Glacier on Mt. Rainier, to practice all of the skills we would need for travel on bigger, less tame, glaciers. During this time of the year, the Inter Glacier is not heavily crevassed; in fact, we did not see any crevasses whatsoever. However, we decided to rope up to practice glacier travel, and to be thinking about what goes on on a glacier.
We camped at 8,200 feet, just below Camp Curtis. Our initial plans and permit included camping at Camp Curtis, but talking to climbing ranger David Gottlieb on the way up, we decided and got permission to camp lower, where the wind would be survivable.
We weren’t able to see any fireworks because of the overcast skies, but the trip was definitely worth missing fireworks down low. And, in case you were wondering, we were able to find both tent poles. They slid 1,500 feet to the base of the Inter Glacier, and were sitting mere inches apart. What luck! 7/4 – 7/5/2010
